Energy Efficiency, Renewables & Carbon Reduction

Energy Efficiency, Renewables & Carbon Reduction

Overview

Fact: Most of our electricity is generated from coal, natural gas, and oil – major contributors to pollution and greenhouse gas buildup. Electricity from renewable resources that don’t involve fuel combustion, such as solar, geothermal and wind, offers a clean energy alternative. Improving energy efficiency, reducing carbon emissions, and using renewable resources not only helps clean our environment, it saves money.

Working Group Agenda

The Bethesda Green Energy Efficiency, Renewables & Carbon Reduction working group advances energy efficiency by introducing sustainable living practices to the community, educating local businesses and residents about new products and services, and creating programs designed to help the community learn how to become more energy efficient and save money.

Case Studies/Successes

  • GreenerLiving Bethesda. A new project offering residents the opportunity to easily track their energy usage with an online tool from Earth Aid and discover ways for improvement.

  • Kill-a-Watt meters. Bethesda Green provides Kill-a-Watt meters for loan to measure phantom electricity usage and discover opportunities to save money.

  • Home energy audit bundle deals. Groups of 5 or more homeowners receive discounts on home energy audits and energy improvement.

  • Biodiesel fuel initiative. In partnership with Montgomery County, Bethesda Green surveyed Bethesda restaurants about mining their waste vegetable oil for producing local biodiesel fuel.
